Death Valley

Skeptoid presents a Skeptoid Adventure: Death Valley 2024!

THE BASICS: This is an exclusive 3-day exploration of historic Death Valley. All transporation, lodging, and meals are included. The trip departs from Las Vegas, NV on the afternoon of Sunday, October 27, and returns the evening of Wednesday, October 30.

Sand dunes Old stamp mill Pictographs Burros

WHAT WILL WE SEE? You will get to see all of the best-known attractions (Badwater, the Artist's Palette, etc.) but so much more. You will hear expert commentary on the park's geology and mining history, as well as its anthropological history. Day 2 is planned to include sites not open to the general public. Day 3 can end the only way a Skeptoid trip can end: with a visit to Racetrack Playa, where forces (until recently thought by some to be strange and mysterious) drive rocks across the lakebed, seemingly by themselves. We'll see:

  • The hottest place on Earth
  • The lowest place in the United States
  • The sailing stones of Racetrack Playa
  • Massive ore-crushing stamp mills from a century ago
  • The sand dunes of Tatooine and other movie sites
  • Ghost towns and desolate cemeteries
  • Ancient petroglyphs and pictographs
  • Wild burros whose ancestors once hauled mining riches
  • Geologic features that show how the Earth changed over the millennia
  • Volcanic cones and craters
  • Many of the Devil's favorite properties
  • And much more...

YOUR GUIDES: Your trip will be hosted by Skeptoid's Brian Dunning with a crew of scientists and local experts.

CAN I MAKE IT? Many of our stops will offer short hike opportunities. If you can walk a mile on level streets without difficulty, you should have no trouble. Most locations in Death Valley are NOT wheelchair accessible. It is called Death Valley for a reason, but we'll have an experienced and well prepared staff plus plenty of water and air conditioned vans.

CONDITIONS: Death Valley weather is unpredictable. Temperatures may range from 50ºF/10ºC to 95ºF/35ºC. This time of year is generally mild.

ACCOMMODATIONS: You will be staying in Beatty, NV, the nearest town to Death Valley, which has the best lodgings that are reasonably available. Remember this is an adventure and learning trip, not a luxury trip; but you will be well fed!

MORE INFORMATION: Email Jeff Wagg at jeff@skeptoid.com anytime with any questions. All registrants (and all Skeptoid members) can join our Discord channel to discuss the trip, at skeptoid.com/discord. More details will be sent by email as the date approaches.

$400 of your ticket price will be a tax-deductible donation to Skeptoid Media, a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit.

Don't miss this first-of-its-kind Skeptoid Adventure!

FAQ

Mission Patch

Registration deadline is September 1.

Times for arrival/departure? We will firm this up, but figure around a 2pm departure on Sunday, October 27 from the Horseshoe Las Vegas, and a 6pm return on Wednesday, October 30. Plan on a fudge factor for that return time (don't trust it too much), as travel through Death Valley can be unpredictable.

Can we join the trip in Beatty instead of Las Vegas? For some people coming from California, it may be easier to join the trip in Beatty, NV on Sunday night and go home from there on Wednesday night. Yes! That's totally fine. We can communicate directly about logistics.

Vegan/etc food options? Beatty, NV is not exactly metropolitan but we will find a way to accommodate all dietary restrictions. Please give us advance notice.

Cancellation? You can cancel for a full refund before September 1. If you cancel during September there will be a $250 cancellation fee. There are no refunds after September 30.
